"I’ve been in business for 7+ years and have had more “roll over” in IT support than in employees. My business is a high-end residential design firm, like many of its peers experienced steady, aggressive growth from 2003-2008, felt a bit of a “sudden halt” with the occasional threat of down turn in the later part of 2008 and early 2009 but has, fortunately returned to full-steam here in 2010. I have suffered the consequences of being the “small client” at the larger company where my account was regularly passed to the newest trainee in the door, who never seemed to know where log-in codes where, account numbers, etc. nonetheless the ins and outs of our self-hosted server system. Conversely, I’ve been the larger client for a small shop that loved to outsource the work on my firm to others and then triple (or more) the price he paid them when invoicing me. Likewise, I was regularly receiving recommendations for upgrades to both hardware and software that didn’t really seem all that necessary. None of this would have been all that annoying if the owner of the company (my contact) actually understood anything that was being done and or recommended. The time spent on hold and/or talking in circles while he clarified/translated the information from his subcontractors was both costly and time consuming.
